John Diaz has been the San Francisco Chronicle’s editorial page editor since 1996. His editorials and his columns have won numerous local, state and national awards. He served as a juror for the Pulitzer Prizes in 2001, 2002, 2015 and 2016. He also writes a weekly column for The Chronicle, northern California’s largest newspaper.
Before joining the opinion pages, Diaz directed the newspaper’s East Bay news coverage. He started at The Chronicle in 1990 as an assistant city editor.
Diaz has previously worked as a reporter for The Denver Post, the Associated Press in Philadelphia and for the Donrey Media Group in Washington, D.C.
Diaz graduated from Humboldt State University in 1977 with a degree in journalism. He received a “Distinguished Alumni Award” from HSU in 2009, and in 2010 was the university’s commencement speaker. He also was the 2017 commencement speaker at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, CA.
